Web Designer Celebrity Say-Sos

posted on 2 Dec 2005 by Nathan Steiner

Say-So friends, we’ve started a fun little experiment: Celebrity Say-So is a line-up of some top-shelf web design and development folks - each of whom will give Say-So a whirl and make a post in December. More info, plus a schedule and links to the posts is here.

How to add Say-So to your My Yahoo page

posted on 17 Nov 2005 by Nathan Steiner

It’s really easy to add the most recent Say-So’s to your My Yahoo page, here’s how you do it:

  1. Click one of the “+ Add Content” links on your My Yahoo page
  2. In the “Find Content” box, type in “say-so” and click “Find”
  3. The first one listed will say “Most Recent Say-So’s”, click the “+ Add” button next to it.

Thats it! For extra options, you can shift it around on the page, and click the edit button to change configurations, such as how many posts are displayed, and even short summaries.

Yahoo! Picked Say-So

posted on 17 Nov 2005 by Nathan Steiner

Today we found that Yahoo! added Say-So to their picks page in the right hand-column under “New to Yahoo!” Welcome to the folks who found Say-So this way, and thanks for contributing with your Say-So’s and responses. We are working on new features and improvements, and have something exciting planned for December. Stay tuned!

To login, or not to login?

I just posted a Say-So asking for some feedback on if you’re willing to create a “Say-So Account” to have access to advanced features… give us some feedback on how you feel about it!

Movin’ on up… part 2!

posted on 16 Nov 2005 by Chris Wilson

Our move to our new server is under way! The site is still running on the old web server, but the database is over on our new server. It doesn’t appear to be having any performance impact, but if you spot any bugs, please do let us know!

The DNS changes to swap things over to our web server are being made now, so hopefully once that propagates, we’ll be up and running, and ready to really kick this thing into action.

In other news, we were featured on www.AOL.com for a while today as one of their hot site picks!

Update: The DNS change has been made, and web traffic is swinging itself over to the new server!

Movin’ on up…

You spoke, we listened!

Response time on Say-So can get a little… sluggish… from time to time. When we first launched, we thought our hosting arrangement would hold, but it hasn’t, and the growth in traffic we’ve seen has been incredible.

That said, we’re packing up shop, and moving things on over to Media Temple. We have a transition plan that shouldn’t cause any downtime (other than a short shutdown to take a snapshot and move the database over), though there may be a slowdown in response time as the application runs on the old server with the database on the new one. We’ll be keeping a close on eye on things, but if you spot any trouble, please do drop us an email at support -at- say dash so dot org.

Thanks for your patience, we’ll be running at full stride soon!

Caught a little bug…

posted on 13 Nov 2005 by Chris Wilson

Whoopsie! I found a little buglet that slipped through our beta testing. While we’re able to reproduce some issues in our development and test environments, some really require the full volume of production data to surface themselves. I found this one when I posted a response to a Say-So that was about a week old, and it didn’t show up in the “recently responded to” list! Oops.

After debugging and re-factoring the database query that generates that list, I’ve pushed an update that corrects it. The previous list certainly wasn’t representing the volume of responses we were generating. Sorry ‘bout that, y’all!

Say-So Stickers

posted on 13 Nov 2005 by Chris Wilson

We’re proud to announce an exciting new feature: Say-So Stickers!

Say-So Stickers allow you to extend Say-So into your web site or blog through some really simple JavaScript. Currently we have four stickers:

  1. Number one is a simple there have been X responses-type sticker, with included styling
  2. Number two contains the same information as number one, but without styling for those who want to style it themselves
  3. Number three breaks down the responses by response type
  4. Number four contains the same information as number three, but without styling for those who want to style it themselves

Including a sticker in your web page is very easy. You’ll need the “public ID” for your Say-So, which is the 8 characters that follows the “http://www.say-so.org/view/” in the location bar when you view your entry. Once you have that information, include this in your page or blog entry where you’d like the sticker to appear:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.say-so.org/sticker/ABCD1234/1"></script>

You’ll want to replace the ABCD1234 with the public ID of your Say-So, and the “1” that follows it can be any one of the four stickers currently offered.

Have questions, problems, or suggestions about Say-So stickers? Click on the sticker below and give us some feedback!

Say-So version 1.4

posted on 11 Nov 2005 by Chris Wilson

Welcome to Say-So version 1.4! We pushed the new version live last night, and here’s a rundown of what’s new:

  • Tagging is here! You can now tag your Say-So’s (if you want to add tags to your existing Say-So’s, just edit them from the manager page, and you’ll see the new entry box for tags). Tags are separated with spaces, and to use a multi-word tag, just enclose it in quotation marks. From the view Say-So page, you can click any of the tags to browse other entries with those tags or (super-secret for those of you reading the blog), go to http://www.say-so.org/tags/ for a sneak-peak at the beta version of our tag browser.
  • E-mail notification - you can now enable e-mail notification from your Say-So manager page. To avoid e-mail overload, you’ll receive at the very most one e-mail an hour that contains links to all of your Say-So’s that have new responses, as well as the number of new responses (since the last e-mail) for each. If there are no new responses, you won’t get an e-mail. Is an hour the right interval? If not, let us know!
  • New show/hide “offensive” (or “adult”) Say-So’s, which will default to “hide”. A Say-So will be marked as offensive if the author indicates it (via a checkbox) when writing it, or when enough votes are tallied from other Say-So’ers. All public Say-So’s will include a link for flagging as offensive.
  • New “flag as spam” feature, which works just like the offensiveness flag, but removes the post from public view completely when the system determines it spamworthy.
  • Better support for international character sets. The international response to Say-So has been impressive, and we hope being able to use native characters will help this out.
  • A new development blog (that you’re reading now!), which is a single place to go for news about upcoming features, goodies, etc. And of course we’ll link to Say-So’s for your feedback.
  • New homepage columns - we are doing away with “most visited” as it ends up being self-fufilling. Instead we will have: Newest Say-So’s, Recently Responded, and Popular Say-So’s. Popular, by the way, will be more than just most-responses.
  • Various bug fixes, interface tweaks, and other minor changes.

We’ve still got some exciting stuff in the pipeline, so keep an eye on this blog for new features as we roll them out!

Give us your feedback!
